In October 2021, I had a very profound experience with local Shaman, Joe Pahl. Before we met, I wanted to learn more about Shamanism so I went to a wonderful local store, Legends of Time, that predominantly sells products created by Native Americans and other indigenous cultures. There I discovered the most beautiful introductory book about Shamanism by Christa Mackinnon. The artwork is absolutely stunning and it provided a great foundation for my upcoming appointment.
I learned that the word Shaman comes from the Tungus tribe in Siberia. Shamanism is the oldest spiritual practice dating back to ancient times and is now practiced all over the world. Shamanism originated in tribal societies and is not associated with any religion. McKinnon writes, “it is a universal spiritual path based on the expanding of consciousness by creating altered states to explore, connect and work with the hidden spirit world, what we might call today, the energetic quantum realm.”
Meeting Joe
Since Joe doesn’t have a social presence or a brick-and-mortar set-up, I was grateful for my conversations with Nic, otherwise I would have never met Joe. Once again, I truly believe Spirit was at work: placing the right people in my path, one breadcrumb at a time. I met Joe at his friend’s place; a combination of business front with an amazing attached home in the back.
I asked Joe some questions about Shamanism and how he came to do this work. He explained to me that his wife, who had passed from Cancer a few years prior, was really the student. She was looking into alternative therapies for healing and struggling to make sense of her life in the face of a terminal diagnosis. After her passing, Joe took up the baton in her honor and continued the journey.
He explained that Shamans believe that everything has a conscious and consciousness is merely a form of energy. We also talked about how Native American young men would go on Vision Quests to commune with their soul. Once they were ready, the vision would appear. As many other teachings have concurred: when the student is ready — the teacher will appear.
I told Joe about my struggles in life, from childhood to present day. I explained that it felt like my life was a series of two steps forward, three steps back and that at times it seemed that ‘God’ was just fucking with me. I told him about my Dark Night of the Soul experience and that I was seeking any assistance he could provide. After listening to my story, Joe made two very powerful statements; “Illness makes us worship the Gods” and “Suicidal thoughts are our souls’ way of waving the red flag.”

Resources

Next, Joe told me about two women that I might find interesting. First was Jane Roberts, the American poet, author and psychic medium who channeled an energy essence who called himself “Seth”. During the 1970’s, together with her husband, she wrote several channeled books entitled the Seth Material. The core of Seth’s teachings state that ‘consciousness creates matter and that each person creates their own reality through their thoughts, beliefs and expectations’. Sound familiar? This is exactly what I wrote about in earlier posts and what contemporary quantum physics has since confirmed. I purchased one of their first books, Seth Speaks — The Eternal Validity Of The Soul in which Seth speaks about the soul, reincarnation and death.
Jane and Seth were an enormous influence on the entire New Age movement including some of the most notable figures in the field, such as Marianne Williamson, Deepak Chopra, Shakti Gawain, Louise Hay, Richard Bach, and many others.
The crazy coincidence between myself and Jane (and I believe why Joe made the connection) is that she suffered from early-onset Rheumatoid Arthritis and Colitis for most of her life! Another strange coincidence is she shares the same name as my mom — spelled Jayne — and she passed on September 5 — my mom’s birthday (“Spooky Stuff” as Einstein said)!
He also told me about Caroline Myss, PhD, medical intuitive, NYT best-selling author and international speaker in the fields of human consciousness, spirituality, mysticism, health and energy medicine. Caroline teaches and lectures on our pre-birth soul agreements through the lens of collective archetypal patterns and their influence on our souls journey.
In her book Anatomy of the Spirit — The Seven Stages of Power and Healing, Caroline’s first principle is, “Our Biography Becomes Our Biology”. This is exactly what we heard from Seth some 50 years ago and what Joe Dispenza and other modern contemporaries also teach.
Caroline writes that “All our thoughts first enter our systems as emotional, mental, psychological or spiritual energy which produce biological responses that are stored in our cellular memory.” She goes on to explain in detail the correlation between the seven chakras, organs, metal/emotional issues and the resulting physical issues.

Next Joe made a few suggestions to help with my arthritis pain including : Rick Simpson Oil, a high potency cannabis extract made from THC/CBD and other cannabinoids; fasting; immersion therapy such as a float tank and far-infrared sauna. I told Joe I was no stranger to THC/CBD and had my medical card for a while now. As far as fasting, I barely eat much at all — while it’s not considered fasting, I think if I ate any less, I might wither away! Floating and the far-infrared sauna were two modalities I had heard about and was definitely interested in trying in the future.
Tarot
Joe did a Tarot reading for me. Since I wasn’t too familiar with Tarot he explained that the 22 Major Arcana cards represent the big picture in one’s life or the Souls Journey while the 56 Minor Arcana cards correspond to our daily life, the ups and downs and are represented by the four elements:

Once the cards were shuffled, I cut the deck, he turned up the first 6 cards and asked me to place them however I’d like.
- Cups = Water — emotions, intuition, relationships
- Wands = Fire — action, invention, energy
- Swords = Air — challenges, conflict, mind
- Pentacles/Coins = Earth — work, finances, domestic affairs, health
Past/Present
The King of Cups stands for compassion and wisdom, balance between mind and heart, and has a deep level of emotional maturity. However, the King isn’t content and would much rather be free of his duties to pursue more imaginative pursuits.
The King of Wands craves action, adventure and is fearless. Similar to the first card, this King doesn’t want to rule the mundane affairs of the kingdom, he wants to be free to live a life of excitement.
Five of Cups represents loss, grief, and disappointment. The man is focused only on the past and doesn’t notice the other full cups that represent hope for the future.
Present/Future
The Four of Wands depicts two couples celebrating the building of community through teamwork. They have worked hard together and are now admiring their accomplishments.
The Hanged Man is a Major Arcana card representing sacrifice, release and learning to let go of control and go with the flow. It’s also about faith, trust and the divine.
The World is the last card of the Major Arcana and represents fulfillment, harmony and completion — the arrival of the soul. The four fixed signs in the corners represent the four elements of the zodiac (fire, earth, water, air). Having come full circle, you have finally arrived — Now, start all over!
I have taken some time to meditate on these cards and have come to a deeper understanding of the story they are weaving together: The King feels trapped — like he can’t truly be himself and this makes him grieve for his lost life. But there is hope if he can become a part of something bigger/a community of like-minded souls, he’ll find his purpose. And if he can learn to let go to flow and have faith in something greater, then he will arrive and finally be set free! This resonates with me 1000%.
Chakras & Crystals

After the Tarot reading, Joe asked me to choose a crystal. I selected a beautiful bright blue stone, Lapis Lazuli, into which I blew all of my worries and asked for the assistance of my ancestors. Joe explained that when we ask our ancestors in spirit for help it actually helps their soul’s journey as well.
Next, Joe intuitively examined my energy centers, or chakras, and determined that my 4th, the heart chakra, was blocked. Caroline Myss, PhD. writes, “The fourth chakra is the central powerhouse of the human energy system.” The middle chakra mediates between the body’s lower three energy centers and spirit’s upper three. It is the heart chakra that determines their health and strength. If we can accept our personal emotional challenges as extensions of our Divine plan for soul growth, release our emotional pain and let go of our need to know why things happened to us, we can reach an inner state of peace. However, in order to do so, we must forgive ourselves and others and let go of our need for justice. We must love ourselves enough to disassociate from our “wounds” in order to take back our power and truly become a co-creator with the Divine.

I asked Joe what crystals might be helpful to work with for the heart. He recommended either Ruby Fuchsite or Rose Quartz.
Overall, Rose quartz is a stone of pure love. It assists in awakening the heart to its purest loving potential allowing one to find love for themselves and others. This awakening of the heart also provides deep feelings of personal fulfillment and contentment. It assists with spiritual attunement to the Earth, Universe, and the Divine which allows one to deeply link their own heart to the hearts of others.
The Crystal Council
Next he used a Vogel Cut Crystal to perform a few ‘extractions’. Vogel crystals are cut from natural quartz to exact standards that maximize the collection, amplification, and transmission of the Universal Life Force Energy/Chi/Prana. What he told me next was shocking: Joe saw many “crutches” in my 1st Root and 2nd Sacral Chakras. He saw that I was crippled in many lifetimes and possibly had suffered from Polio. Joe saw that I had taken on others’ afflictions — specifically people who couldn’t walk — in order to heal them. I was reminded of the movie the Green Mile. Joe moved the crutches up and out of my energy field.
The next thing he saw was an unpleasant lizard-like man, possibly from a previous life. He moved him out (Thank Goodness 😆). He also saw a group of grandmothers working for something or someone else, that had weaved several ancestral chords together going into my third chakra, the Solar Plexus. Apparently, I had taken on someone else’s karma. He blew into my soul again and mentioned in about a year my third eye, sixth chakra would show up. I asked what I could do to help facilitate this. Joe explained anything that you love to do — when time ceases to exist, and you are in the “flow” state. For me, that includes the arts, writing, dancing, being in water, being in nature and with animals, laughing with loved ones, having great conversations, learning more about spirituality, meditation and being with my soul-tribe.

Soul Journey
Next Joe performed a Soul Journey in which he played a Native American drum. I could feel the energy moving through my entire body as he continued to drum in the rhythmic fashion for about 15 minutes. Afterwards, Joe explained that he was looking for soul loss. Usually he will see people or animals but this time he saw something very unexpected; a young flexible tree that had become calcified and grew old before its time (Just like me 😮). This was possibly an original wounding that I had been working on for lifetimes. Joe blue fluidity into my third eye and he instructed me to meditate focusing on a young, vibrant and healthy tree.
After my session was complete, Joe suggested that I write two letters: one to the chord-weaving grandmothers and one to the tree. Thanking them lovingly but letting them know their time was up and I no longer needed their services!

I release all energy within my field that does not belong to me, that does not serve my highest good in this lifetime, in all lifetimes and in all dimensions. I send it to the fire to be alchemized, returned to zero point and integrated with the Source of all that is. And so it is done. It is done. It is done.
